Zinc(II) and Copper(II) Complexes of 4-Styrylpyridine and 1-Adamantanecarboxylic Acid: Syntheses, Crystal Structures, and Photopolymerization

A combination of 4-styrylpyridine (spy) and 1-adamantanecarboxylic acid (Hadc) was employed in the assembly reactions with Zn(II) Cu(II) nitrates. The photoreactivity products compared discussed on basis structure–function relationship. Zinc(II) complex 1 is a trinuclear species type [Zn3(spy)2(adc)6] which three zinc(II) atoms are linearly arranged, two adjacent linked by bridging carboxylates. Two spy ligands occupy both terminal positions, yielding overall structure six-bladed windmill. Copper(II) 2, [Cu(spy)2(adc)2][Cu2(spy)2(adc)4]·2DMF, an inorganic cocrystal comprising mononuclear trans square planar geometry dinuclear paddle-wheel structure. In photoreaction experiments characterized 1H NMR spectroscopy, found to be photoinert, while copper(II) photoreactive form cyclobutene ring via [2+2] photodimerization between ligands, resulting preparation one-dimensional chain as coordination polymer. separations C=C bond pair obtained from crystal structures for also support their photoreactivity. For example, monocopper(II) complexes aligned head-to-tail manner separation 3.899 Å pair, satisfying so-called Schmidt criteria (<4.2 Å). However, no other satisfy this condition.
